Matěj Smetana

Matěj Smetana studied intermedia and painting at FaVu in Brno. He's currently working on installations, comics and videos, his conceptual approach (criticism of art institutes) resulted in photographs of scratches on the classic works of minimalist Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt and John McCracken. He's occupied with interactions between intentionally and accidentally set limits (for example, in 3D objects), whose spatial groupings are based on the symbolic shapes. His cycle of wooden objects Flags (2002) embodies the form of four national flags, processed through intersection of geometric bodies. In a film genre he repainted three trailers for classic horror films on plastic film and added them to their original sound. His random theme is highlighted in the installation Remix, in which the author plays with the idea of a separate intelligent consciousness in media communications. It's presented by selecting and marking a series of words or letters from copies of books, photographs and subtitles. Together they are forming the "existential" message.
